Whether it’s my own clients or random people that stalk find me on the Internet, I sometimes get asked for advice on blogging. Since I love the sound of my own voice (err … the type of my own fingers?), I’m happy to oblige. Here’s a common one:

How often should I be updating my company’s blog?

I tend to answer this question with a question: What schedule can you commit to consistently that ensures you maintain quality?

Often times (including myself when I first started blogging) – people go full board for the first couple weeks, posting dutifully and daily. And then … you miss a few days … and then a week and … and then a couple weeks … and then it’s just embarrassing.

Set a realistic schedule that you can stick to consistently. Blogging once a week should be the very minimum you do (and according to some people, that’s not nearly enough – but if you’re just starting, ease into it. If you want to be more ambitious, contact a content marketing agency for help). Take time to cull ideas and links to other articles or blogs that inspire you everyday. And if inspiration hits you when it’s not technically the time to blog? Go for it! This is especially true if there’s something timely or in the news worth talking about.

If you approach blogging as some sort of afterthought to your day – that extra thing you do once all the “real” work is done, it will never be a priority and there’s a very good chance it will fall to the wayside. Your corporate blog IS an important part of your job and your content marketing strategy. It’s a part of your brand reputation, customer acquisition and client retention – which, last I checked, were pretty significant aspects of marketing.

Because quality and consistent blogging IS so important, some companies hire this out to freelance writers and content marketing companies to help them out this this. How do you find the right person or company to do this? Stay tuned!
