Designers and Writers Unite

March 12th, 2014 by

words vs images 1Maybe it’s me, but it feels like imagery is beginning to win the war on the web. Instagram is surging in popularity. Lookout boring words, images are on the way.

Designers and writers continue their battle for mind share on a page. And the problem is, they just plain think differently.

Writers are all about words, linear in thinking, drawn out in delivery. Storytelling starts with a tease, and holds back that ah-ha moment to the end.

Designers are all about the 1st impression pop that stops you in your tracks. They believe in finding the common good, not the individual story within. They are all about the bottom line. And convinced there is not one right (write;-) answer.

Somehow, they always come together, and make it work.

I recently connected a designer, owner of Zaum, with a great writer in our pool of talent at WriterAccess. The client, and friend, sent me his rough copy, and I simply sent it along to the writer with a few notes and instruction. The writer agreed to simply take on the project after reviewing the beautifully designed site built in SquareSpace.

The result: The design inspired the copy to sing.  The copy inspired the design to sing.

Designers and writers may be different, but one without the other is MUCH less than the sum of both parts.
