Podcasts and Video Content

February 10th, 2010 by WriterAccess

ipod-nano-podcastWhen you’re looking for content ideas, sooner or later podcasts and videos will come up as a suggestion. While it’s true that podcasts and other media can be a popular alternative to hiring a writer to come up with SEO articles, there’s an important aspect of audio and video products you should keep in mind; you can’t get SEO value from a video clip! That’s not to say you shouldn’t use them—far from it. The right kind of audio and video can add value to your site and help create a buzz in social media. But it won’t get you any additional SEO content unless you present this material in the right way.

The key is to offer the media with good, SEO optimized descriptions of the program written at least as long as any tips you already have on the site. This insures the search engines have something to latch onto. You should also try presenting some screen grabs or image captures of any video for an additional SEO content boost, but this tactic only works if you title your image files appropriately. Give those image files an SEO keyword related to the material presented and you’ll eventually wind up with a bit of additional traffic from people searching on Google Images and other platforms. This tactic might not be relevant for all websites, but for those who want the extra traffic it’s an option.

  1. Good point that you don’t get SEO from video or audio content (though you do get it from the title and description, that’s another discussion altogether). That having been said, I’m betting that YouTube will begin to index audio in the next year or so. Their transcription services and GOOG-411 show that they are involved in getting as much voice data as possible, so it’s a logical step.

In addition, using video and audio is a good secondary means of content delivery given the fact that some people are more likely to learn when presented with auditory or visual cues. Perhaps starting with the video, stripping out the visuals to turn it into audio, and then transcribing for written content is overkill for some – but useful as a content delivery strategy.
