We were going to call this “Your Guide To Becoming A Stalker” but figured that might attract a creepy element we’re just not prepared to deal with … so informavore it is!
Half the battle of creating great web content and handling content marketing (not to mention developing products, services and overall marketing strategies) is determining what connects with the audience, clients and customers you’re after.
When it comes to web content, it’s about understanding subjects of interest, attitudes, trends, questions or even lifestyles of the people you want to reach.
How do you find out what your audience is saying?
- Take a look at the blogs, websites or Facebook groups of people in or fans of your industry. What are they talking about? What are their commenters saying? Subscribe to these so they appear in your RSS Reader for easy access.
- Subscribe to industry magazines or join organizations and associations that are embedded in what you do. Often times, they’ll share research that applies to your audience.
- Search Twitter for keywords or hashtags strongly associated with your brand or industry. Take note of what’s being said. Follow people who have an interest in the services or products you offer.
- Sign up for a Google Alert that will send you an e-mail anytime a specific term or name comes up in the media (be it social media or mainstream news). Be specific! A term that is too general will have you sifting through far too much mail. Always be sure read the comments, too!
- Look at websites and companies, like Conversition that are in the listening and tracking business. Free, trial or subscription services are for the taking.
- Talk to people (gasp!). Every encounter you have with a client or potential customer is an opportunity to gather information. You can do this both formally (keep a database of information and conduct satisfaction surveys / new client information forms) and informally (take them to lunch and chat!).
